Whether creating her own music in live or recorded settings, or filling in the blanks on other people's projects, Gwen "G.T." Thomas follows resonance to go wherever she is needed and work her way into the heart and soul of any project in front of her.
She's been putting out a steady flow of music and art since 1999 (see "MUSIC" page for a lengthy discography) – originally in Seattle, but since 2009 based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Recently carving out the genre "Modern Exotica" for herself, she plays a live set of her own tunes as G.T. Thomas. Her electric bass lines ground you, then wind around her soft, intense soprano voice. With lyrical prowess and a penchant for sincerity, and the occasional addition of vibraphone (performed by Julien Moussiegt) to these mysterious songs, it's "lounge meets pop meets story-time from the edge of the world."
Gwen Thomas has collaborated with Fleet Foxes, Benny Sings, GOSTO, Bauer, The Free Design's Sandy and Chris Dedrick, and Grammy-winners like The Metropole Orchestra and Steely Dan’s Michael Leonhart.
In 2016 her performance piece "Elevator Music" placed in the top 10 for a time-based art works contest in Berlin. She's won a nation-wide shadowbox competition in the Netherlands. She's performed music on stages from Seattle, to NYC, to Lapland. She's been heard on commercials and in modern art museums across Europe. And the debut G.T. Thomas album she wrote, arranged, engineered, and produced herself in 2011, "The Luckless Pedestrian Years" (Smoking Ant Records), received airplay on London's BBC Radio 1 and was praised from L.A., to Amsterdam, to Western Mass:
"... A GREAT INTRO INTO HER SUBTLETY AND POWER AS AN ARRANGER/ SONGWRITER AND ORCHESTRATOR. CHECK IT OUT!"
- Van Dyke Parks (Composer, Arranger)
"STUNNINGLY ARRANGED ORCHESTRAL POP SONGS WHEREIN THERE'S MORE TO BE DISCOVERED UPON EVERY LISTEN." - Eric Scipio (Heaven Magazine)
"A MELODIC ARCHITECT; EACH RECORDING A SCENIC TOWN YOU WANT TO REVISIT."
- Ken Maiuri (The Hampshire Daily Gazette/ WMUA radio DJ/ Keyboardist B-52s)
The focus for Thomas is on music, but with experience in performance art, filmmaking, improv comedy, dioramas and miniatures, it comes as no surprise when she creates venues out of fringy locations (e.g., hair salons, windmills), experimenting with immersing her audience deeper into the story of her songs. Mirrors, labyrinths, model trains, collaborations with visual artists… only once exposed to all her story-telling devices will you get to fully experience the breadth and depth of her songs.
Anyone interested in collaborating, please feel welcome to get in touch via the "CONTACT" page.
A set up to 40 minutes is available upon request for cozy café, salon, boutique, living room (etc) settings. Can be performed as a solo-act (bass+voice only), or a duo (with addition of vibraphone), at acoustic volume or amplified.
